New Hope in New Land - Gurung Family

September 25, 2017

Community Housing of Wyandotte County is pleased to introduce our newest homeowners, As and Nir Gurung! The Gurungs became homeowners in September 2017. They opened their home to CHWC staff with sweet, warm tea and shared their story. Mr. and Mrs Gurung are originally from Nepal. Together, they lived in a refugee camp in that country for twenty years. With their three daughters and Mr. Gurung’s mother, they migrated to the United States and settled in Spokane, Washington in 2014. Later, they welcomed the youngest member of their family, Maria.

Mr. and Mrs. Gurung choose  to relocate to Kansas City Kansas  with the hope of finding more job opportunities. They arrived to Wyandotte County and to CHWC’s office in 2015. They were in need of a place for their family and leased a CHWC rental home where they lived and raised their family until becoming homeowners.

The Gurungs have lived in the US for only 5 years and have already become homeowners. Their hard work and dedication allowed them to build and settle into their new home. Mr Gurung mentioned that he is proud of this new house and enjoys seeing his family happy, but material things are not important; life and family is what matters most.

The homeowners attended CHWC homebuyer education class and received homeownership counseling. They applied and qualified for CHWC downpayment assistance of $25,000 along with CHIP funding for a total of nearly $40,000 in subsidy. As and Nir chose the 401 floorplan; a beautiful traditional split level that sits on 11th and Armstrong near Waterway Park. They went with a breezy, cool blue exterior body color and a bold copper red trim color. CHWC is beyond proud to call them our neighbors and wish them the best of luck with their new home.
